Background of the Study
Indigenous herbal medicine has played a vital role in healthcare across many cultures, particularly in regions like Ijebu-Ode where traditional healing practices are deeply embedded in community life (Olaoye, 2023). This study investigates how indigenous herbal remedies influence human physiology, focusing on their biochemical properties, therapeutic potentials, and side effects. Modern pharmacological research increasingly validates the efficacy of herbal treatments, yet there remains a gap in understanding their mechanisms of action in local contexts (Afolabi, 2024). The research involves a comprehensive review of traditional practices, field interviews with herbal practitioners, and laboratory analysis of herbal extracts to ascertain their physiological effects (Babatunde, 2025). By integrating ethnobotanical knowledge with scientific investigation, the study aims to bridge the gap between traditional and modern medicine. It will explore how these remedies contribute to health maintenance, disease prevention, and even treatment outcomes within the community. This approach not only honors cultural heritage but also contributes to the global search for natural therapeutic agents.

Statement of the Problem
Despite widespread use of indigenous herbal medicine in Ijebu-Ode, there is limited empirical evidence on its physiological effects. This knowledge gap affects both the credibility and integration of traditional remedies into mainstream healthcare (Adekunle, 2023). Moreover, the lack of standardized research methods has impeded understanding of dosage, efficacy, and safety, necessitating rigorous scientific evaluation (Fashola, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To document common indigenous herbal medicines in Ijebu-Ode.

  2. To evaluate their physiological impacts through laboratory analysis.

  3. To assess their potential integration into modern healthcare practices.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the most commonly used indigenous herbal remedies in Ijebu-Ode?

  2. How do these herbal medicines affect human physiology?

  3. What potential exists for integrating these remedies with modern medical practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Indigenous herbal medicines significantly influence physiological functions.

  2. Specific herbal compounds exhibit measurable therapeutic effects.

  3. Standardization of herbal practices can enhance their efficacy and safety.

Significance of the Study
This research provides valuable insights into the health benefits and risks of indigenous herbal medicine, promoting evidence-based integration of traditional remedies into contemporary healthcare systems. The findings may lead to improved public health outcomes and cultural preservation (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to investigating the influence of indigenous herbal medicine on human physiology in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Herbal Medicine: The use of plants and plant extracts for medicinal purposes.

  • Physiology: The branch of biology concerned with the normal functions of living organisms.

  • Ethnobotany: The study of how people of a particular culture and region make use of indigenous plants.
